Archeology Symposium Announcement and
Call for Papers

Current Archeological Research and Public Outreach
in the Potomac Region

In the past year, Thunderbird Archeology, a division of WSSI, has had the opportunity to study a diverse and interesting collection of sites in the Washington, DC Metropolitan region. These include a late 18th century rural tavern in Loudoun County, Virginia, the Civil War era Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery site in the City of Alexandria, Virginia, and a mid 18th century slavery site in Fairfax County, Virginia (44FX0223), that produced one of Virginia's largest assemblages of colonoware (a coarse ceramic associated with enslaved Africans, African Americans and American Indians in the colonial, early national, and antebellum periods).

In an effort to share the results of our research with our colleagues in the region and provide an opportunity for other researchers to do the same, we will be hosting this free symposium at WSSI's Gainesville, Virginia office. Artifacts from site 44FX0223, including unusual decorated colonoware sherds, will be available for examination.

Proposals for papers to be presented on the following topics are invited:

• Results of recent historic and prehistoric archeological field projects in the    Potomac Region of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

• Syntheses of past regional archeological research, including material culture    studies that yield new data or insights

• Analysis of current models and methods in regional archeological research

• Papers on other topics related to archeological and historic research will also    be considered

Abstracts of 200-300 words may be submitted before September 1, 2012, to:
