Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) welcomed a group of Franklin Middle School Young Scholars and their teachers on Wednesday, July 29th. Young Scholars students are rising 7th graders who spend their summer studying a JASON project. JASON is a non-profit organization that aims to help students get excited about and interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This year’s Young Scholars’ project is “Resilient Planet” and explores environmental topics such as ecosystems and conservation. These areas of science closely link with the work done here at WSSI.
During their visit, students received a tour of WSSI’s building and grounds, focusing on low-impact development (LID) and stormwater management technologies. This gave students the opportunity to learn how stormwater can impact the environment, especially receiving streams and wetlands, and how even small-scale LID practices like rain barrels can help protect ecosystems from their own backyard all the way down to the Chesapeake Bay. Students also met WSSI engineers and designers, learning not only how varied and exciting STEM careers can be, but also some of the kinds of projects we work on day-to-day.
WSSI is proud to support students’ interest in STEM fields and the schools that encourage it. We wish the Franklin Middle School Young Scholars good luck for the rest of their summer session.
