The Wildlife Foundation of Virginia (WFV), a nonprofit group dedicated to enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities within the Commonwealth, and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) will host the 2nd Annual Old Dominion One Shot Turkey Hunt on April 16, 2016. The One Shot is a state-wide turkey hunt fundraiser; it attracted 39 hunters and 37 guides from across Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia in its inaugural year and is guaranteed to be bigger and even better this year!
Last year’s tournament-winning bird was harvested by first time turkey hunter Catherine Ottley, whose bird weighed 21 pounds and had an 11 inch beard and one inch spurs. Austin Brockenbrough guided Catherine and her father on a property in Goochland County.
Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc.’s own Bryce Miller had the honor of guiding retired U.S. Army Sgt. John Moore on a successful hunt on Litt Thompson’s beautiful property in southern Caroline County. Sgt. Moore, a Purple Heart recipient, shot the turkey with the longest spurs in the tournament: 1-1/8 inches long! You can read more in our July 2015 edition of Field Notes.
After a day of hunting across the Commonwealth on April 16, hunters, guides, landowners, and guests will gather at the New Market Pavilion in downtown Richmond for an evening of music, dining, drinks, awards, and auctions.
